DEBORAH, one of the seven women prophetesses whose prophecies are recorded in the Bible, was given as judge to the Jews at a time of confusion and suffering. Deborah was seen as a great and respected leader. She wielded great power and was able to turn her people from darkness to light.
In the tapestry, with its palette limited to blues and greens, we see to the right side of the work Deborah seated under the palm tree. In the center, woven in distinctive coloration, a figure representing Israel approaches the judge in a manner of respectful dance.
